Your current wall thickness of 3.5 inches with Fiberglass Batts gives R-11.2, which falls slightly below the recommended target R-13 for local walls. Consider adding closed-cell spray foam for a complete air-seal and premium efficiency.
Clear answers to some of the most common questions about home and building insulation.
Closed-cell spray foam is denser and more rigid, offering a higher R-value (around R-6.5 per inch) and acting as a vapor barrier that blocks water. Open-cell foam is softer and more flexible, with an R-value of around R-3.7 per inch. It is excellent for soundproofing and filling deep cavities, but does not act as a moisture barrier.
Heat naturally rises. During winter, a poorly insulated attic allows heat to escape through the roof, forcing your heating system to work harder. In summer, solar heat radiates from the roof into your living spaces. Upgrading to the recommended standard (R-49) stops this heat exchange, saving you up to 30-50% on heating and cooling utility costs.
R-value measures a material's thermal resistance (its resistance to heat flow). The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. Building codes require different target R-values depending on the location in the house (e.g., walls typically need R-13 to R-21, while attics require R-38 to R-49+).
Most residential retrofits, such as attic blow-ins or crawl space encapsulations, are completed within a single day. Larger commercial buildings or full-house spray foam installations can take 2 to 3 days depending on the square footage. Our crews coordinate carefully to minimize disruption and clean up thoroughly.
